Pom Poms back in the studio
Payo here (aka Marlene of Pom Poms) reporting from Palms Springs, CA. I’ve been making my way back and forth from here to LA to make an album with my partner of Pom Poms Billy Mohler. We’re doing this fast and it’s fun. How does it work? Ya know, covid? Do you hire a band? Nah.
Let me pull the velvet curtain back on our process if you will. So what happens is I’ll send Mohler tracks of what i’m feeling. References for inspiration if you will. A look book of sound. Mohler, in between running a record lablel (Make Records), running a music school, playing and writing for everyone under the sun and raising chickens and a family he’ll take 20-30 minutes in his home studio to bang out a track for me on an unsuspecting Teal Squire Jag. He’ll text me the track, I top-line write the lyrics and melody, we’ll do this for two or three songs and I come to LA to record them. There’s only been a few that we’ve written on the spot. I take taco breaks, he takes smoothie breaks while I clean up lyrics. It’s chill af.
Now that all the songs are written the works goes into the details but where we stand now…we’ve got the Main Meat.
